Pride in Polar Research (PiPR) was founded in 2018 by an openly intersex, queer, and disabled early career researcher as a direct response to the unjust inequities many LGBTQIA+ professionals face in the polar world. PiPR's mission is to listen to, support, unite, and uplift diverse, queer minds to promote the best possible science in the Arctic and Antarctic... and we need your help!
For #PolarPrideDay2023, we're reaching out to our international network to seek help with capacity building. Despite a relatively passive communications strategy, PiPR has reached a global network of tens of millions and our supporters have carried out our #PolarPride activities in over 50 countries and on the high seas. Everything PiPR does is run by volunteers and, for every public activity you see, we have a team of dedicated scholars passionately working behind-the-scenes offering Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (JEDI) consulting work at no-cost to individuals, research teams, non-profits, and businesses. We pride ourselves in acting in a quiet capacity and always putting the needs of the underrepresented people we fight for in the highest priority position, whether helping organizations develop diversity policies, organizing events, or offering one-on-one support to community members. Despite our successes, we want to do even more!
Moving forward, PiPR is eager to continue acting in the same role we have since 2018, but hope to increase our public visibility and ultimately our impact by adding dedicated members to our leadership team. We are looking to recruit anyone interested to join one of PiPR's volunteer leadership groups; if you don't have experience, don't worry as we're happy to provide free, professional training for any category:
Communications: PiPR is seeking SciComm savvy people to primarily help run our social media accounts (Twitter/X, Facebook, Insta, Bluesky) and assist in maintaining our website, which we hope will include a blog starting in 2024. We're also interested in working with talented graphic designers.
Language Access: PiPR recognizes that the polar world is dominated by English and we hope to reach a greater audience by offering our content in other languages. If you are willing to act as a translator and advisor to help us make our content more accessible, we'd love to speak with you.
Events: PiPR would like to offer both online and in-person workshops—ranging from social to formal research opportunities—and need people who can act as the point-person. Right now, we rely on members informing us of their travel plans so we can support their efforts to share our message at conferences or other events.
PiPR Grants & Fundraising: One of PiPR's long-term goals is to be able to offer funding to community members, whether for conference travel, SciComm initiatives, or small research stipends. We would like to establish a small team to explore moving towards non-profit status and fundraising. (This is the team who will work on our pins / badges!)
JEDI Consulting: We're looking for people with lived or professional experience fighting against injustice and who are willing to share lessons they've learned with people who reach out to PiPR for support. Your level of commitment can vary from being someone we call on a case-by-case basis so we can offer the best-possible advice to becoming fully trained to give media interviews on behalf of the cause.
Interested? Send an email to Info@PrideInPolarResearch.com with your name, a brief expression of interest, and the time zone you're located in. A member of our team will follow-up with you as soon as possible!
On behalf of the entire PiPR leadership team, thank you to every single one of our supporters around the world; you are the reason we keep fighting and inspire us to want to continually improve. If you have any ideas for us, we would genuinely love to hear them. Please feel free to contact us at Info@PrideInPolarResearch.com. Happy #PolarPrideDay!
